Our story

The origins

The family of X and X had been living in this house since the beginning of the century, making a living from the surrounding lands. Life in this area has always been marked by the difficulties of mountain life, which entails complicated living conditions, with challenging weather and, often, a lack of resources. In this context, the Cal Mateu house emerged and survived for years, like many others, as a testament to the will of these people to build a decent life in their territory.

Arrival in Odèn

In 1996, Teresa and Albert arrived. In search of an authentic place to put down roots, we found Odèn and, specifically, Cal Mateu. At first glance, we already felt a very special connection with the area. This is an area deeply rooted in its origins and traditions, but at the same time, it welcomed us immediately.  It was hard to imagine finding a place with more charm and magnetism than this one. Thus began an adventure that would lead us to build memories and a story we never expected.

The restaurant

After many years of enjoying the house with our family, and also working hard to improve Cal Mateu and slowly build our corner, we were ready to launch a project that turned out to be more special than we could have ever imagined. We opened the Cal Mateu d’Odèn Restaurant.

This restaurant became a very familiar space, receiving a welcome we didn’t expect. There came a time when we hardly received customers; instead, we received friends. Many people came from far away to spend the day at Cal Mateu and enjoy a good meal in good company. Certainly, this period filled us with pride. This experience came to an end with the Covid-19 pandemic.

A new chapter

It is from this moment, after all the experiences we’ve lived, that we decided it should be you who writes the next pages of the history of Cal Mateu!
